Lemonhead faithfuls had to wait almost a year for another production. This time round it was a new genre, a satire, based on Karl Schembri's controversialnovel, Il-Manifest tal-Killer.
After reading the book, director/producer Bryan Muscat met the novel's author Karl Schembri. They discussed the spirit and the language of the book and Muscat started the writing process. It took him a while to decide what to exclude... finally he finished his 120 page script.
Auditions held; cast chosen; the cast started working on their own on their respective character profile. Once this was done, the first rehearsal took place at the end of June, at Sandro Vella's flat.
Not everything went smoothly during the rehearsals, as some members went abroad, others had their vacation planned. Summer is a really bad time for rehearsals. Most of the cast were also involved in TV or other Theatrical productions. "It was hectic, stressful at times", said Bryan, "Thank God Susann was around. She's the reason why we kept going!"
Well then, thanks to her Production Week came by, and all was jelling together quite smoothly. Fist performance went great, not so much from the attendance aspect. Half full. Then we had all other nights sold out. A decision to perform an extra show on Sunday Mattinee was reached, and within hours, this was also fully booked.
It was a great ride, for the cast, crew and the audience alike. A lot suggested Lemonhead should keep this style going, but Muscat was prompt in his reply, "No way! I will never stick to one genre, or one style. Whatever interests me at the time, I'll go for it! Being a thriller, a comedy, dark, another satire, pure drama or black, it doesn't matter as long as it's a good script.
Bryan Muscat's comments during the cast party were, “It was a great experience. It was a long and hectic journey, very stressful at times, but all very rewarding at the end. I would like to thank you all for all your hard work, for all your efforts. There's nothing better than to have been a tutor to all of you, to work with you and realize you've all become better than the master. Keep it up, and thanks for the lovely wine!
Il-Manifest tal-Killer was stage at the MITP Theatre in Valletta on the 4th , 5th , 11th and 12th of October 2008. Extra performance on Sunday 12th.
