Frankenstein
April 2007

We all worked really hard for this production. I remember meeting for a brain storming session some 10 months ago. We discussed so many topics and so many titles… Frankenstein was one of them and eventually was the chosen one.

I asked Noel to write the script and suggested that he creates something more than just the novel and to give an extra emphasis on female characters. He did just that, as when I went through the lines for the first time I was really excited and enthused about our new project. Noel is a fine writer with great vision and ideas. This script was a very good one… his next ones can only get better.

Louise and I went through a session of three hours of auditions to select the Cast for both Frankenstein and Lucrezia Borgia. By December, Frankenstein's cast started work on their character profile which led to some very good rehearsal sessions from January till March.

It was a great experience working with a very dedicated group of actors. They all came and gave everything during the rehearsals. They were well prepared with their lines and their characters. Obviously both Noel and I suggested some additions or changes to what they all brought with them. Usually the blocking stages are cold with very few emotions… however in this case the actors were already showing a great deal of emotions. Rehearsals never took longer than two hours. Working with such a fine group has made it an experience I can never forget.

The production team members worked just as hard. We had Derek designing the poster, great artwork. Tricia met Louise to choose the costumes from the Lemonhead wardrobe, and got help from other lemonheadders with what wasn't found… thanks Michelle Zerafa, Elaine Ellul and Rose Axisa for the costumes you lent us.

Jason hung from one scaffold to another, setting up the lights in place and taking care of extensions and bulbs and the mixer upstairs. He also helped a lot in setting up the place, giving us great help with the platforms and chairs. While Anton really did a work of art with his incredible make up, especially on the Monster. It wasn;t just the dress rehearsal and the performances... but the photo shoot and the plaster day... great guy, great talent.

Sandro kept everyone up to date with what was going on… minutes of meetings, changes in schedule and so on. Maris took detailed notes of every comment and direction I gave. She was always prompt to suggest lines and directional notes to whoever needed it at the time. Michelle Zerafa also worked really hard in spreading the word… her PR work was intense and very effective. We, as in Lemonhead, never had such exposure, especially on the printed media, as we had this time round.

Keith gave more then a helping hand to Stage & Props Manager Michelle Bonnici. We all knew it was their first ever experience in such a role… however we all thought they were born for the role. They worked tirelessly to make everything just the way we wanted, with no hassle or useless din.

Noel's assistance in direction was immense and greatly appreciated. He always intervened when necessary, and almost telepathically, we were always on the same wavelength, and hardly ever did we contradict each other… actually I don't remember any incidences where we did contradict each other.

Louise's presence is mostly felt during the last week… production week… where it is mostly needed. Her eye for minute detail is extremely useful for everyone. Obviously she works hard at reminding me of deadlines before the production week, checks whether every department is in line and on schedule, and also the responsibility of handing the thousands of leaflets in various strategic spots and areas.

This was our eleventh production so far. We had some great shows… Animal Farm, Jien Hu, Gurija Rrabjata, Van Gogh, Tlett Gimghat and Bar Macbeth were all great shows really… My personal favourite was bar Macbeth till a few weeks ago.

Now I believe Frankenstein was our best production so far over all, especially when one considers the level of acting achieved by all, the script and the setup. However, it's not every ones opinion. Different people, different opinions.

I received a good number of emails and sms's re Franknestein. The vast majority enjoyed the show, using superlatives such as ‘brilliant', ‘wow', ‘incredible'. Some said it was their first experience attending a Lemonhead Production and promised to come again next time. Some thought that there were too many blackouts which alienated them from the story. I received mainly very positive feedback regarding the level of acting, although one person said we were ‘too natural as in street natural' which the person didn't like (well, we must be very happy as that is definitely what we tried to achieve).

My personal opinion is it was great, and if I had to re-do it, I would change nothing and no one. I'm happy with how it went, as everyone did exactly what I had in mind.  Different people might give different feedback to each individual actor we had in this production… my feedback is simple. You all did exactly what I asked for… therefore, you were great.

Well done. Looking forward to Lucrezia.
