Bar Macbeth is a Maltese adaptation of William Shakespeare's Macbeth . The playis scripted by Bryan Muscat and takes place in Malta during the 1950s. Apart from the aforementioned differences, the general plot is still very faithful to that of the Bard, so the audience can expect plenty of back-stabbing, murders and intrigue.
Bars and Night Clubs in the then mecca of local entertainment, Strait Street, are up for grabs, and two fraternities, that of Duncan and that of Siward, are at loggerheads to gain control of the neighbourhood. Macbeth is the former's trusted hitman but when three fortune-telling sisters predict his sudden rise to power, things don't remain as clear as they were before.
Bar Macbeth was an overall success judging from the comments we received after each performance. Some even claimed it to be Lemonhead's best production yet.
Of course, there were some people who did not like it, and the newspaper crits have yet to be published. Albeit this however, the professional attitude of everyone involved in Bar Macbeth was transmitted in no uncertain terms to the audience. People who commented negatively on the play never failed to point out how dedicated the cast and crew were.
It was also a great satisfaction to see that despite the bad weather a lot of people turned up. This boosted up the cast's morale immensely considering that most of them were in a sorry physical state.
Unfortunately, the sudden change in weather brought with it the obligatory bouts of flu and general feelings of unpleasantness. There were times when the dressing room looked like an infirmary with a wide assortment of pills, tablets, lozenges, syrups and whatever. But we still managed.
The last week of every production is always very hectic and demanding on everyone involved. Nonetheless, when the last performance looms near, it seems that all the hardship becomes a distant memory and sadness creeps in to take the place of fatigue. After all, the cast and crew would have spent several weeks seeing each other almost on a daily basis.
Performances: - 10, 11, 12 and 13 of December - 2005 at the MITP Theatre.
